Below you will find answers to some of the most common questions asked about Jellagen products.

What type of collagen is jellyfish collagen?

The collagen extracted from Jellyfish is referred to as “Type 0”. This evolutionary ancient collagen shows evidence of homology to type I, II, III, V and IX. Homology to other collagen types to be confirmed.*

Can you confirm whether Jellagen collagen is from a single species, or do you harvest a mixture of species?

Our current jellyfish collagen is only prepared from one species, Rhizostoma Pulmo.

What are the differences in amino acid composition vs mammalian collagens?

Jellyfish collagen shows a very similar amino acid composition to mammalian collagen, the main difference is that jellyfish collagen contains less hydroxyproline than mammalian collagen.*

Why can I not simply use the standard 3mg/ml or 6mg/ml solutions or freeze dried material to create a gel?

The JellaGel material has been optimised specifically for gelation. Our research grade solutions of biomaterial and freeze dried material will not undergo gelation but are perfectly suitable cell culture substrates for coatings and cross-linked matrices. 

How do I resolubilise freeze dried Jellagen material? 

We recommend gentle overnight stirring at 2-8c in 0.1M Acetic Acid but DMSO can also be used.  Please note there will be some remaining particulates. 

Is Jellagen biomaterial cross-linkable?

Jellagen can be cross linked with a variety of cross-linking agents. 

Are Jellagen 3D scaffolds cross-linkable? 

Jellagen 3D scaffolds are cross-linked in house with 1% EDC. Other crosslinking agents can also be used. 


Application FAQ’s

 

Can Jellagen be used to culture organoids?

Yes, Jellagen can be used to successfully grow organoids. Publications are pending. 

Can Jellagen be used for electrospinning applications?   

Yes it can.  Currently under development, we are working with an electrospinning company to finalise a protocol. 

Can Jellagen be 3D printed?  

Yes, it can when added to commonly used stiffening agents such as alginate or chitosan. The JellaGel today requires optimisation for 3D printing. 

Can Jellagen be used for medical device applications? 

Jellagen is manufactured according to ISO13485 for use in medical devices. However, the medical device manufacturer will need to perform all finished product formulation testing and certification in accordance with the authorising regulatory bodies. 


Analytical Technique FAQ’s

 

What methods can be used with the liquid/scaffold/hydrogel?  

Jellagen is compatible with all routine analytical methods tested. For specific methods and any application specific uses please contact us. 

Does Jellagen auto-fluoresce?   

Jellagen biomaterials have some degree of background auto-fluorescence, but this has not been shown to be at a level that interferes with imaging.
